Introducing the CO2 UltraPulse® Alpha Laser by Lumenis for Fully Ablative Resurfacing and Fractional Laser Resurfacing.
Dermatology Consulting are delighted to be one of the first and few clinics in the United Kingdom to have the latest and most powerful CO2 laser – the UltraPulse® Alpha Laser by Lumenis which is widely regarded by laser experts throughout the world as the “Ferrari” of CO2 lasers.
Fully ablative CO2 Resurfacing is when the laser is used to give 100% coverage and it is still regarded as the gold standard to improve lines, wrinkles and pores permanently. It can also permanently remove brown spots/”sun spots” (the medical name “solar lentigos”) and “age spots” (medical name “seborrheic keratoses”).
In addition, the heat of the CO2 laser causes immediate tightening of the skin which can be seen as the treatment takes place. The tightening continues over several weeks as the healing progresses and visible improvement continues for up to a year after the treatment. Most patients look at least 5-10 years younger afterwards.
What are the Advantages of the CO2 UltraPulse® Alpha?
The “Ultrapulse” CO2 has the fastest pulse duration compared to competitors which means that it heats the targeted skin very quickly to achieve the desired effect, but does not overheat the surrounding skin. This means it is less painful and causes less swelling and redness than other CO2 laser manufacturers. This also gives a faster recovery time for the patient.
It is very adaptable and can be adjusted between very superficial settings for thin skin with fine wrinkles, or deeper settings for thicker skin and deeper wrinkles.
It can also be used to treat a fraction of the target area (described as fractionated). The fractionated settings can be used for patients wanting a faster recovery for wrinkle treatment and are also excellent for improving scars. It can also be used in combination in the same treatment setting i.e. fully ablative plus fractionated which gives the benefit of both.
The settings can be very quickly and easily changed. This means that the treatment can be fine tuned to the individual patient’s need, for example the deep “bar code lines” on the upper lip often need deeper and 100% coverage to flatten them down, whereas the thinner, less wrinkled skin on the outer cheeks or the delicate skin of the neck usually only need more superficial fractionated settings. Different settings can be used in different areas during the same session to give a bespoke treatment.
What is the Recovery Time?
Fully ablative resurfacing usually requires one to take a week at home to recover, and for stronger treatments antibiotic and antiviral tablets are usually needed, but it usually results in the skin looking 5-10 years younger permanently. With fully ablative treatment of the skin most individuals can apply make up on the 7th day, although the skin may still be pink under the make up for a few weeks. However, if one cannot afford a week of recovery, gentler or fractionated settings can be used for a faster recovery time.
